Type 2 diabetes is typically diagnosed through the following tests:

  • A1C Test: Measures average blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months. A result of 6.5% or higher indicates diabetes.
  • Fasting Plasma Glucose (FPG) Test: Requires fasting for at least 8 hours. A result of 126 mg/dL or higher suggests diabetes.
  • Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT): Measures blood sugar before and 2 hours after drinking a glucose-rich drink. A 2-hour result of 200 mg/dL or higher indicates diabetes.
  • Random Blood Sugar Test: A blood sugar level of 200 mg/dL or higher, regardless of when you last ate, may indicate diabetes.

If you have symptoms of diabetes (e.g., frequent urination, excessive thirst, unexplained weight loss), your doctor may use one or more of these tests to confirm a diagnosis.
