An A1C level of 7.4% is considered elevated and falls within the diabetes range. According to the CDC, the following A1C ranges are used to diagnose diabetes and prediabetes:

  • Normal: Below 5.7%
  • Prediabetes: 5.7% to 6.4%
  • Diabetes: 6.5% or above

For most people with diabetes, the target A1C goal is 7% or less. An A1C of 7.4% indicates that blood sugar levels are higher than recommended, which may increase the risk of diabetes-related complications over time. It’s important to work with your healthcare provider to adjust your treatment plan, which may include lifestyle changes, medication, or both.
