The A1C test measures your average blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months. Here's how it works:

  • Hemoglobin and Glucose: When sugar enters your bloodstream, it attaches to hemoglobin, a protein in your red blood cells. The more glucose in your blood, the more sugar-coated hemoglobin you have.
  • A1C Percentage: The A1C test measures the percentage of your red blood cells that have sugar-coated hemoglobin. This percentage reflects your average blood sugar levels over time.
  • Time Frame: Since red blood cells regenerate every 3 months, the A1C test provides a long-term view of your blood sugar control.

A1C and Blood Sugar Levels

A1C % Estimated Average Glucose (mg/dL)

6 126
7 154
8 183
9 212
10 240

For most people with diabetes, the goal is to keep their A1C below 7%. However, your doctor may set a different target based on your health condition.
