The A1C test measures your average blood sugar levels over the past 2 to 3 months. This is because red blood cells, which carry hemoglobin (the protein that glucose attaches to), regenerate approximately every 3 months. The test provides a percentage that reflects your blood sugar control over this period.

  • Normal: Below 5.7%
  • Prediabetes: 5.7% to 6.4%
  • Diabetes: 6.5% or above

If you have diabetes, your doctor may recommend getting an A1C test at least twice a year to monitor your condition. However, the frequency may vary depending on your treatment plan and how well your blood sugar is managed.
