The A1C test is generally accurate for measuring average blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months, but certain factors can affect its accuracy:

  • Conditions that affect red blood cells: Such as anemia, sickle cell anemia, or thalassemia.
  • Kidney or liver disease: These can alter red blood cell turnover.
  • Medications: Certain drugs, like opioids or HIV medications, may impact results.
  • Pregnancy: Hormonal changes can affect A1C levels.

If you have any of these conditions, your healthcare provider may recommend alternative tests or interpret your A1C results with caution.
