A diagnosis of diabetes is typically made based on the following blood sugar levels:

  • Fasting Blood Sugar Test: A level of 126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/L) or higher after fasting for at least 8 hours.
  • A1C Test: An A1C level of 6.5% or higher indicates diabetes. This test measures your average blood sugar over the past 2-3 months.
  • Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT): A blood sugar level of 200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/L) or higher 2 hours after drinking a glucose-rich drink.

If your results fall into these ranges, your healthcare provider may confirm the diagnosis with a second test on a different day.
