The A1C test measures your average blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months and is reported as a percentage. The higher the percentage, the higher your blood sugar levels have been. Here are the general ranges:

  • Normal: Below 5.7%
  • Prediabetes: 5.7% to 6.4%
  • Diabetes: 6.5% or above

In extreme cases, A1C levels can go much higher, sometimes exceeding 10% or even 15% in uncontrolled diabetes. However, such high levels are dangerous and require immediate medical attention to prevent severe complications like diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) or hyperglycemic hyperosmolar syndrome (HHS).

If your A1C is very high, it's crucial to work with your healthcare provider to develop a management plan that includes lifestyle changes, medication, and regular monitoring.
