The A1C test, also known as the hemoglobin A1C or HbA1c test, is a blood test used to:

  • Diagnose prediabetes and diabetes: It measures your average blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months.
  • Monitor diabetes management: For people with diabetes, it helps track how well blood sugar levels are controlled over time.

How It Works

  • The test measures the percentage of red blood cells that have sugar-coated hemoglobin. Higher blood sugar levels result in more sugar attaching to hemoglobin.
  • Red blood cells regenerate every 3 months, which is why the A1C test reflects a 3-month average.

A1C Ranges

  • Normal: Below 5.7%
  • Prediabetes: 5.7% to 6.4%
  • Diabetes: 6.5% or above

For most people with diabetes, the goal is to maintain an A1C level below 7% to reduce the risk of complications.
