A blood sugar level of 138 mg/dL can be considered high depending on the context:

  • Fasting Blood Sugar: If this reading is taken after fasting (no food for at least 8 hours), it is higher than the normal range (70–99 mg/dL) and may indicate prediabetes or diabetes.
  • Post-Meal Blood Sugar: If this reading is taken 1–2 hours after eating, it is within the normal range (less than 140 mg/dL is generally acceptable).

What to Do:

  • If fasting blood sugar is consistently 100–125 mg/dL, it may indicate prediabetes.
  • If fasting blood sugar is consistently 126 mg/dL or higher, it may indicate diabetes.
  • Consult your healthcare provider for further evaluation and testing, such as an A1C test, which provides an average blood sugar level over the past 2–3 months.

A1C Ranges:

  • Normal: Below 5.7%
  • Prediabetes: 5.7%–6.4%
  • Diabetes: 6.5% or higher
