The following A1C levels are used to diagnose diabetes and prediabetes:

  • Normal: Below 5.7%
  • Prediabetes: 5.7% to 6.4%
  • Diabetes: 6.5% or above

These numbers are based on the A1C test, which measures your average blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months. If your A1C level is 6.5% or higher, it indicates diabetes. For a more accurate diagnosis, your doctor may also use other tests like fasting blood glucose or an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT).
