The A1C test, also known as the hemoglobin A1C or HbA1c test, is a blood test used to diagnose and monitor diabetes. It measures your average blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months by assessing the percentage of hemoglobin (a protein in red blood cells) that is coated with sugar (glycated hemoglobin).

A1C Ranges for Diabetes Diagnosis:

  • Normal: Below 5.7%
  • Prediabetes: 5.7% to 6.4%
  • Diabetes: 6.5% or above

For people with diabetes, the A1C test helps evaluate how well their blood sugar is being managed. The goal for most adults with diabetes is to maintain an A1C level below 7%, though individual targets may vary based on medical history and other factors.

Why is A1C Important?

  • It provides a long-term view of blood sugar control.
  • It helps in adjusting treatment plans, including medications and lifestyle changes.
  • It reduces the risk of diabetes-related complications when managed effectively.

If you have diabetes, your A1C should be tested at least twice a year, or more frequently if your treatment plan changes.
