Fasting blood glucose levels are used to diagnose diabetes and prediabetes. Here are the standard ranges:

  • Normal: Less than 100 mg/dL
  • Prediabetes: 100 to 125 mg/dL
  • Diabetes: 126 mg/dL or higher on two separate tests

Fasting blood glucose tests require you to fast (not eat or drink anything except water) for at least 8 hours before the test. If your levels are in the prediabetes or diabetes range, your healthcare provider may recommend further testing or lifestyle changes to manage your blood sugar.
