The normal range for blood sugar levels varies depending on when the test is taken. Here are the general guidelines:

  • Fasting Blood Sugar (before eating): 70–99 mg/dL (3.9–5.5 mmol/L)
  • Postprandial (2 hours after eating): Less than 140 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L)
  • Random Blood Sugar: Typically less than 140 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L)

For individuals with diabetes, target ranges may differ and should be determined by a healthcare provider. The A1C test, which measures average blood sugar over the past 2–3 months, is also used to diagnose and monitor diabetes. Normal A1C levels are below 5.7%, prediabetes is 5.7% to 6.4%, and diabetes is 6.5% or above.
