Diabetes is diagnosed based on specific blood sugar levels. The following ranges are used to diagnose diabetes and prediabetes:

  • Normal: Below 5.7% (A1C) or below 100 mg/dL (fasting blood glucose)
  • Prediabetes: 5.7% to 6.4% (A1C) or 100 to 125 mg/dL (fasting blood glucose)
  • Diabetes: 6.5% or above (A1C) or 126 mg/dL or higher (fasting blood glucose)

These values are based on the A1C test and fasting blood glucose test. The A1C test measures your average blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months, while the fasting blood glucose test measures your blood sugar after an overnight fast.

If your results fall in the diabetic range, consult your healthcare provider for further evaluation and management.
