Normal blood glucose levels vary depending on when you last ate. Here are the general guidelines:

  • Fasting (before eating): 70–99 mg/dL (3.9–5.5 mmol/L)
  • 2 hours after eating: Less than 140 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L)

For people with diabetes, target blood glucose levels may differ and should be determined by a healthcare provider. The A1C test, which measures average blood glucose over the past 2–3 months, is also used to assess long-term glucose control. A normal A1C level is below 5.7%.

Condition A1C Level

Normal Below 5.7%
Prediabetes 5.7% to 6.4%
Diabetes 6.5% or above
