The HbA1c test, also known as the A1C test or hemoglobin A1C test, is a blood test used to:

  • Diagnose prediabetes and diabetes: It measures your average blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months.
  • Monitor diabetes management: For people with diabetes, it helps assess how well blood sugar levels are controlled over time.

How It Works

  • The test measures the percentage of hemoglobin (a protein in red blood cells) that is coated with sugar (glycated hemoglobin).
  • Since red blood cells regenerate every 3 months, the test reflects long-term blood sugar levels.

A1C Ranges

  • Normal: Below 5.7%
  • Prediabetes: 5.7% to 6.4%
  • Diabetes: 6.5% or higher

This test is a key tool in diabetes care but does not replace daily blood sugar monitoring.
