The A1C test measures your average blood sugar levels over the past 3 months. The following ranges are used to diagnose prediabetes and diabetes:

  • Normal: Below 5.7%
  • Prediabetes: 5.7% to 6.4%
  • Diabetes: 6.5% or above

If your A1C level falls between 5.7% and 6.4%, it indicates prediabetes. This means your blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. Prediabetes is a risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes, but lifestyle changes such as healthy eating, regular exercise, and weight loss can help prevent or delay the onset of diabetes.

For more information, you can visit the CDC's page on A1C testing.
