A high hemoglobin A1C level indicates elevated average blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months. The following ranges are used to interpret A1C results:

  • Normal: Below 5.7%
  • Prediabetes: 5.7% to 6.4%
  • Diabetes: 6.5% or above

For most people with diabetes, the target A1C level is 7% or less, as recommended by healthcare providers. Higher A1C levels are associated with an increased risk of diabetes-related complications, such as heart disease, kidney damage, and nerve damage.

If your A1C level is high, consult your doctor to adjust your diabetes management plan, which may include lifestyle changes, medication, or both.
