The A1C test is a blood test that measures your average blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months. Here’s how it works:

  • Procedure: A healthcare professional will draw a blood sample, usually from your arm. No fasting is required before the test.
  • Frequency:
    • If you have diabetes, you should have the A1C test at least twice a year.
    • If you’re managing your diabetes well, your doctor may recommend testing every 3-6 months.
    • If you’re at risk for prediabetes or diabetes, your doctor may suggest testing annually or every 1-2 years.
  • Results:
    • Normal: Below 5.7%
    • Prediabetes: 5.7% to 6.4%
    • Diabetes: 6.5% or above

For accurate results, inform your doctor if you have conditions like anemia, kidney disease, or if you’re pregnant, as these can affect the test.
