The A1C test is primarily used for the following diagnoses:

  • Prediabetes: An A1C level between 5.7% and 6.4% indicates prediabetes, which is a risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes.
  • Diabetes: An A1C level of 6.5% or higher on two separate tests confirms a diagnosis of diabetes.
  • Monitoring Diabetes Management: For individuals already diagnosed with diabetes, the A1C test is used to monitor how well blood sugar levels are being managed over time.

Additionally, the A1C test may be covered under insurance for individuals with risk factors such as obesity, family history of diabetes, or other conditions that increase the likelihood of developing diabetes.
