The A1C test measures your average blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months. Here’s how to interpret the results:

A1C Percentage Diagnosis

Below 5.7% Normal
5.7% to 6.4% Prediabetes
6.5% or above Diabetes

  • Normal: Your blood sugar levels are within a healthy range.
  • Prediabetes: You have higher than normal blood sugar levels, which increases your risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
  • Diabetes: Your blood sugar levels are consistently high, indicating diabetes.

For people with diabetes, the goal is typically to keep the A1C level below 7%, but your doctor may set a different target based on your individual health needs.

If your A1C is high, your doctor may recommend lifestyle changes, medications, or more frequent monitoring to help manage your blood sugar levels.
