Diabetes is typically diagnosed through blood tests that measure blood sugar levels. The following results indicate diabetes:

  • Fasting Plasma Glucose (FPG) Test: A fasting blood sugar level of 126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/L) or higher on two separate tests.
  • A1C Test: An A1C level of 6.5% or higher indicates diabetes. This test measures your average blood sugar over the past 2-3 months.
  • Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT): A blood sugar level of 200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/L) or higher 2 hours after drinking a glucose solution.

If your results fall into these ranges, your healthcare provider will likely confirm the diagnosis with additional testing.
