Blood sugar, also known as blood glucose, refers to the amount of glucose present in your bloodstream. Glucose is a type of sugar that comes from the food you eat and serves as the primary source of energy for your body's cells. A blood test to measure blood sugar levels is commonly used to diagnose and monitor conditions like diabetes and prediabetes.

Types of Blood Sugar Tests:

  • Fasting Blood Sugar Test: Measures blood glucose after you have not eaten for at least 8 hours.
  • Random Blood Sugar Test: Measures blood glucose at any time, regardless of when you last ate.
  • A1C Test: Provides an average blood sugar level over the past 2-3 months.

Normal Blood Sugar Ranges:

Test Type Normal Range

Fasting 70–99 mg/dL
Random Below 140 mg/dL A1C Below 5.7%

If your blood sugar levels are consistently high, it may indicate diabetes or prediabetes. Consult your healthcare provider for further evaluation and management.
