You should consider getting tested for diabetes if you meet any of the following criteria:

  • Age 45 or older: Regular screening is recommended, especially if you have other risk factors.
  • Overweight or obese: A BMI of 25 or higher increases your risk.
  • Family history: If you have a parent or sibling with type 2 diabetes.
  • Physical inactivity: A sedentary lifestyle can increase your risk.
  • High blood pressure or cholesterol: These conditions are often linked to diabetes.
  • History of gestational diabetes: If you had diabetes during pregnancy or gave birth to a baby weighing over 9 pounds.
  • Ethnicity: Certain ethnic groups (e.g., African American, Hispanic, Native American) have a higher risk.
  • Symptoms: Frequent urination, excessive thirst, unexplained weight loss, or fatigue.

If you have any of these risk factors or symptoms, consult your healthcare provider for a diabetes screening, which may include an A1C test, fasting blood sugar test, or oral glucose tolerance test.
