The need to fast before a diabetes blood test depends on the type of test being performed:

  • A1C Test: No fasting is required. This test measures your average blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months.
  • Fasting Blood Glucose Test: Fasting is required. You should not eat or drink anything except water for at least 8 hours before the test.
  • Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT): Fasting is required. You will need to fast overnight and then drink a sugary solution, with blood sugar levels tested at intervals.

Always follow your healthcare provider's instructions for the specific test you are taking.
