The Hemoglobin A1C (HbA1c) test measures the percentage of your red blood cells that have sugar-coated hemoglobin. Here’s how it works:

  • Blood Sample: A small blood sample is taken, usually from your arm or finger.
  • Lab Analysis: The sample is sent to a lab where it is analyzed to determine the percentage of hemoglobin that has glucose attached to it.
  • Time Frame: The test reflects your average blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months, as red blood cells regenerate roughly every 3 months.

This test does not require fasting and is commonly used to diagnose prediabetes, diabetes, and to monitor blood sugar control over time.
