Prediabetes is typically diagnosed using one of the following tests:

  • A1C Test: Measures your average blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months. Prediabetes is indicated by an A1C level between 5.7% and 6.4%.
  • Fasting Plasma Glucose (FPG) Test: Measures blood sugar after an overnight fast. Prediabetes is indicated by a fasting glucose level between 100 mg/dL and 125 mg/dL.
  • Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT): Measures blood sugar before and 2 hours after drinking a sugary drink. Prediabetes is indicated by a 2-hour glucose level between 140 mg/dL and 199 mg/dL.

These tests are usually performed in a doctor's office or lab. If you have risk factors like obesity, family history of diabetes, or are over 45, your doctor may recommend regular screening.
