To test for prediabetes, healthcare providers typically use one of the following tests:

  • A1C Test: Measures your average blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months. Prediabetes is indicated by an A1C level between 5.7% and 6.4%.
  • Fasting Plasma Glucose (FPG) Test: Measures blood sugar after an overnight fast. Prediabetes is indicated by a fasting glucose level between 100-125 mg/dL.
  • Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT): Measures blood sugar before and 2 hours after drinking a sugary solution. Prediabetes is indicated by a 2-hour glucose level between 140-199 mg/dL.

If you have risk factors such as being overweight, having a family history of diabetes, or being over 45, it's recommended to get tested regularly.
