To get tested for diabetes, you can follow these steps:

  1. A1C Test: This blood test measures your average blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months. No fasting is required.
  2. Fasting Plasma Glucose (FPG) Test: This test measures your blood sugar after an overnight fast.
  3. Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT): This test involves fasting overnight and then drinking a sugary solution. Blood sugar levels are tested before and 2 hours after drinking the solution.
  4. Random Blood Sugar Test: This test measures blood sugar at any time, regardless of when you last ate.

When to Get Tested:

  • If you are over 45, you should get tested every 3 years.
  • If you are younger than 45 but have risk factors like obesity, family history of diabetes, or high blood pressure, you should get tested earlier and more frequently.

Where to Get Tested:

  • You can get tested at your doctor's office, a lab, or a clinic.

Preparation:

  • For the FPG and OGTT tests, you will need to fast for at least 8 hours.
  • No special preparation is needed for the A1C or random blood sugar test.

Results:

  • Normal: A1C below 5.7%, FPG below 100 mg/dL, OGTT below 140 mg/dL.
  • Prediabetes: A1C 5.7-6.4%, FPG 100-125 mg/dL, OGTT 140-199 mg/dL.
  • Diabetes: A1C 6.5% or higher, FPG 126 mg/dL or higher, OGTT 200 mg/dL or higher.

If your results indicate prediabetes or diabetes, your doctor will discuss the next steps, which may include lifestyle changes, medication, and regular monitoring.
