Prediabetes is typically diagnosed through blood tests that measure your blood sugar levels. The most common tests include:

  • A1C Test: Measures your average blood sugar level over the past 2-3 months. Prediabetes is indicated by an A1C level between 5.7% and 6.4%.
  • Fasting Plasma Glucose (FPG) Test: Measures blood sugar after an overnight fast. Prediabetes is indicated by a fasting glucose level between 100 mg/dL and 125 mg/dL.
  • Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT): Measures blood sugar before and after drinking a sugary drink. Prediabetes is indicated by a blood sugar level between 140 mg/dL and 199 mg/dL after 2 hours.

If your results fall within the prediabetes range, your doctor may recommend lifestyle changes such as diet, exercise, and weight loss to help prevent the progression to type 2 diabetes.
