To get tested for type 2 diabetes, healthcare providers typically use one or more of the following tests:

  • A1C Test: Measures your average blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months. An A1C level of 6.5% or higher indicates diabetes.
  • Fasting Plasma Glucose (FPG) Test: Requires fasting overnight. A blood sugar level of 126 mg/dL or higher indicates diabetes.
  • Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT): Involves fasting and then drinking a sugary solution. Blood sugar levels are tested after 2 hours. A level of 200 mg/dL or higher indicates diabetes.
  • Random Blood Sugar Test: Measures blood sugar at any time, regardless of when you last ate. A level of 200 mg/dL or higher suggests diabetes.

Your doctor may recommend one or more of these tests based on your symptoms, risk factors, and medical history.
