To get tested for Type 2 diabetes, you can follow these steps:

  1. A1C Test: This blood test measures your average blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months. No fasting is required.

    • Normal: Below 5.7%
    • Prediabetes: 5.7% to 6.4%
    • Diabetes: 6.5% or above
  2. Fasting Plasma Glucose (FPG) Test: This test measures your blood sugar after an overnight fast.

    • Normal: Less than 100 mg/dL
    • Prediabetes: 100 to 125 mg/dL
    • Diabetes: 126 mg/dL or higher
  3. Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT): This test involves fasting overnight and then drinking a sugary liquid. Blood sugar levels are tested periodically over the next 2 hours.

    • Normal: Less than 140 mg/dL
    • Prediabetes: 140 to 199 mg/dL
    • Diabetes: 200 mg/dL or higher
  4. Random Blood Sugar Test: This test measures blood sugar at any time, regardless of when you last ate.

    • Diabetes: 200 mg/dL or higher, along with symptoms of diabetes

When to Get Tested:

  • If you are over 45, you should get tested every 3 years.
  • If you are younger than 45 but have risk factors like obesity, family history, or high blood pressure, you should get tested earlier and more frequently.

Consult Your Doctor: Always consult with a healthcare professional to determine which test is right for you and to interpret the results.
